De streek 

In de Appenijnen, tussen de stad Parma in het oosten en de smalle Ligurische kuststrook in het westen, bevindt zich een stukje onontdekt landelijk Italië. West Emilia Romagna en in het bijzonder de provincia Parma grenst in het zuiden aan Toscane en in het noorden aan Piemonte.  Het landschap is dan ook een natuurlijke overgangsvorm tussen de ruigheid van de Alpen en de liefelijke Toscaanse heuvels. Met name de stroomgebieden van de rivieren Taro en Ceno vormen het prachtige decor van de oorspronkelijke boerendorpen en provinciestadjes. Landbouwgebieden en uitgestrekte natuurgebieden met bossen wisselen elkaar in harmonie af. Hier vindt u Italië in zijn meest natuurlijke vorm, het pure eenvoudige italiaanse boerenlandleven en een rustige streek zonder platgetreden toeristische paden. Wellicht mede hierdoor is de boerenbevolking nog oorspronkelijk, nieuwsgierig, toegankelijk en vriendelijk. 

Het is het gebied van de prosciuto di Parma (Parma ham) en de vele verschillende Parmezaanse kazen. De streek is wereldwijd bekend om zijn gecertificeerde paddenstoelen. De Valtaro en Valceno keuken is net zo eenvoudig, toegankelijk en puur als zijn oorspronkelijke bevolking. Slow food en gerechten van producten uit de streek voeren de boventoon. Seizoenen bepalen de gerechten. In het najaar worden overal paddenstoelen en kastanjefeesten en festivals georganiseerd. De gerechten met paddenstoelen, truffel en de toetjes (dolci) met kastanjes en wilde honing zijn tongstrelend. Überhaupt is de streek bekend om zijn vele creatieve desserts. In het voorjaar is het tijd voor de prugnoli, mini paddenstoeltjes met de smaak van truffel. In de omgeving wordt het hele jaar gejaagd, dus wildgerechten zijn er in overvloed. 

Als u wilt genieten van een rustige vakantie in een gebied, dat eigenlijk meer dan waard is door toeristen te worden ontdekt, maar dat nog niet is, dan zou deze streek een aanrader kunnen zijn. De streek is uitermate centraal gelegen ten opzichte van veel bezienswaardigheden en omdat de autostrada Parma- La Spezia de streek doorkruist, liggen veel toeristische trekpleisters binnen handbereik. De Cinqueterre, de Ligurische kust, Toscane en steden als Parma, Bologna, Pisa, Florence en Lucca zijn binnen handbereik. In de nabije omgeving zijn veel oude kastelen te bezoeken en zijn ook plaatsen zoals Borgo val di Taro, Compiano, Bardi, Bedonia een bezoek waard, daar vindt u ook gezellige terrassen, restaurantjes en bars. Reuring en rust afwisselend naar behoefte. Casale delle Farfalle ligt tussen de dorpjes Tornolo en Bedonia.  

Tornolo ligt boven op de berg achter het huis en heeft een leuk dorps café maar veder beperkte voorzieningen. 

Bedonia is een levendig dorp met een aantal restaurants, cafés, ijssalons (2) en bars. Op zaterdag is er markt en verder kun je hier alle dagelijks benodigdheden krijgen.  Op ongeveer 250 meter van het huis maakt de rivier een bocht waar een lagune  is ontstaan. Hier is een parkje waar je kunt zwemmen met een zonneweide, volleybal veld, kantine en BBQ gelegenheid.  

In de omgeving kun je wandelen, fietsen, mountain biken, paardrijden, etc. Onder motorrijders is het gebied heel populair door de mooie (berg) routes. Vanaf het huis heb je twee bergpassen die naar de kust leiden en alleen de tocht erheen al is zeer de moeite waard ook per auto. Het stadje Borgo val di Taro ligt op 14 km en heeft vele voorzieningen met o.a. 2 grote supermarkten. Het heeft ook een trein station zodat je eventueel per trein steden kunt bezoeken mocht je de voorkeur hebben om de auto een keer te laten staan.

The surroundings 

In the Apennines, between the city of Parma in the East and the small Ligurian coast stroke in the West is a piece of undiscovered rural Italy. West Emilia Romagna and namely the province Parma is locked between Tuscany in the South and Piemonte in the North. The landscape is a natural transfer between the rugged mountains of the Alps and the mellow Tuscan hills.  Especially the valleys of the Taro and Cena rivers form a beautiful décor of authentic farming settlements and small province towns. Meadows and agricultural area’s exchange them self with natural forests in harmony. Here you will find Italy in its most natural form, the pure and simple Italian farming life, a tranquil region without the tourist bustle. Probably this is also the reason why the local population is authentic, interested, open and friendly. 

It is also the area where the famous prosciutto di Parma (Parma ham) and the parmesan cheeses comes from. In addition the certified mushrooms that can be  found here are world famous. The Valtaro and Valceno cuisine is as simple and pure as the authentic population. Slow food and dishes form local products are most common. The seasons determines what’s on your plate. In the autumn mushroom (funghi) and chestnuts festivals are organized in virtually every town. The area is popular for all season hunting, so game as deer and wild boar is served all year round.  

If you would like to enjoy a peaceful holiday in an area, that is more than worthwhile to be discovered by tourists, but is not yet, then this could be the ideal destination. The valley  is located conveniently close to the highway Parma – La Spezia (A15) This brings opportunities to visit Cinque Terre, the Ligurian coats, Tuscany, cities as Parma, Bologna, Pisa, Florence and  Lucca within hand reach. In the near vicinity many old castles can be visited, as well as the villages Borgo val di Taro, Compiano, Bardi, Bedonia . These are lively places with restaurants, terraces, cafes and bars.  Activity or tranquility as you like! 

Casale delle Farfalle is situated between the villages Tornolo and Bedonia. Tornolo is located on the top of the hill behind the house and has a village café but otherwise limited facilities. Bedonia is a lively village with a number of restaurants, café’s, ice-cream parlor’s, and bars. On Saturday there is a market and you can get all your daily needs in the village. Approximately 250 meter from the house the river makes a bend where a natural lagoon has been formed. Here you will find a recreation area where you can swim, sun bath, play volleyball and BBQ.  

In the near surroundings you can hike, ride bicycle, mountain bike, ride horseback, tec. It’s a very popular area with motorbikers because of the beautiful (mountain) roads. 

From the house there are two mountain passes that lead to the coast, the ride down there is more than worthwhile even by car. 

The town Borgo val di Taro at 14 Km from the house has may facilities with amongst others two large supermarkets. It also has a train station so you can go places by train if you would prefer occasionally not to drive.
